Alleen Edith Burris Bernhard was born in Bandera on June 4, 1915 and died Feb. 22, at the age of 91.

She lived in a younger Bandera, with her family's life experiences noted in the Bandera County History Book Committee's "History of Bandera County." Her family survived droughts that ruined their crops, boll weevils that ruined cotton, tick infestations that led to dipping stock and stomach worms that killed sheep-and continued ranching on the old Stevens Ranch.

Alleen rode a horse past Bandera Cemetery to attend school in Bandera. Throughout her life she never lost her love for people, ranching, flowers and animals. Daughter Susie Jennings describes her mother as a person who "never met a stranger." She loved farm animals and never forgot how to "square dance with turkeys."

Mrs. Bernhard was the fifth of six children born to Campbell Clarence Burris of Blanco and Edith Susan Harper of Harper. Her siblings, all deceased, included Lola La Ferne Burris Bell, who taught school in Bandera County, became a college professor, a geologist and wrote many sections for "History of Bandera County"; Herman Bazzell "Buster" Burris, who built and owned the town of Amboy, Calif.; Clarence Burris, who retired from Kelly Air Force Base as an engineer; Jewell La Nelle Burris, who retired from Brooks Aero Space School of Medicine as a lead statistician and Verna Kathleen Burris West, who worked for San Antonio Public Service Company until she married and moved to Nebraska.

Mrs. Bernhard spent her young life in Bandera, becoming acquainted with Bandera's history-makers including J. Marvin Hunter, J.W. Short, Buster Bruce, Ignatious Adamietz, Mike Boyle, Rhea Mansfield and Raymond Hicks, as well as members of the Billings and Stevens families, then moved to San Antonio with her family in 1924.

She graduated in the first class of Jefferson High School, then attended Durham Business College where she learned to use office machines and take shorthand. She worked for San Antonio Public Service Company until 1936 when she married Sterling Vaughn Bernhard Sr., from Mason, who also worked with the company. Later, she worked in the medical field for doctors in the Nix Hospital Building in San Antonio, Civil Service with the USDA and Ft. Sam Houston Post Chapel, from which she retired. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Her four children include Sterling Vaughn Bernhard Jr., Edith Katherine "Susie" Bernhard Jennings, Alleen Mavourneen "Dimples" Bernhard Ellinger and Lawrence Milton "Bernie" Bernhard. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
