Mayor of Cleveland. Born to W.A. Otis, he along with his family moved to the Cleveland area in the 1830's. His father engaged in the banking business. In 1853, Charles became interested in the iron business. He left his father's business and formed the Ford and Otis firm. The firm manufactured axles and bar iron. In 1872, while arranging to build a new plant, he was elected to the office of Mayor for the city of Cleveland. After his Mayor ship, he formed the Otis Steel Company and remained its president until 1899. He returned to banking in 1894 when he became president of the Commercial National bank which later merged with Mercantile National bank and became National Commercial bank.
