Word reached here Friday night of the death of Mrs Martelia Deck Bilbrey, 84, wife of J Porter Bilbrey, who passed away at the ancestral home near Rickman, Overton county, at about 8:30 p.m. Although Mrs Bilbrey had been frail, her condition did not become serious until the middle of last week.
She was the mother of K L, H I and C E Bilbrey, all of whom have been or are members of the Bilbrey Brothers Hardware and Furniture Co. established here in 1914. She was a member of a pioneer family of Clay county and married Mr Bilbrey more than 66 years ago. She made her home on the same place that had been in the Bilbrey family for more than 150 years, with her daughter, Mrs Burr Smith and family. She and her husband enjoyed more than 60 years of married life before he died in 1924.
Due to the extreme wet and cold weather which made roads to the home almost impassable, only a few persons from here were able to attend the services at the home, Sunday, February 1 at 2 p.m. Burial was in the family plot on the home place.
Surviving are 4 sons, K L, Cookeville; Shirley, Livingston; H I and C E, who live here; 4 daughters, Mrs Burr Smith, Rickman; Mrs Ben Qualls, Sparta; Mrs S T Benson, Rickman; Mrs Ernest Gragg, Algood; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, W C Deck, Livingston.
