HOUSTON (HUGH) GRAVES, born May 31, 1825, in Tennessee. His mother, Judie
Bledsoe, died when he was a mere infant; he was reared by his grandfather,
John Graves (11) and did not move from Tennessee to Missouri until sometime after his
marriage to BETSY REYNOLDS, Dec. 6, 1850 (she died Oct. 10, 1900 and is buried at
Guilford, Mo.) He taught school north of Gilford (William H. Sharp, 11342, says
he was his first teacher) and after a few years bought a general store from a man
named Elliott at Guilford, which store he operated until the beginning of the Civil
War. He served as a teamster in Co. H, 1st Missouri Cavalry, Confederate Army,"
from Dec. 27, 1861, to April, 1862, when he died near Van Buren, Arkansas (War Dept,
records).
