Edwin was abroad the USS Vincennes (CC-44) a New Orleans-class Heavy Cruiser as a Coxswain. The Vincennes was attacked and sunk during the Battle of Savo Island, Solomon Islands when she and two other United States ships were caught at night between Imperial Japanese Cruisers Chokai, Kako, Aoba, Kinugasa and the Yubari on 9 August 1942. All three ships were sunk and Edwin's remains were never recovered.

Edwin's the son of Conrad Hines and Bessie Greene. He was married to Anna Lee Lipps.

Edwin is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery.
