Funeral service for Lyle Patterson 82, of Buffalo Center was held Monday, April 8, at the Buffalo Center United Methodist Church. He died April 4, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. Rev. Lois Abel officiated.
Katie Patterson served as soloist and Jan Missman was organist. Honorary pallbearers were Arnold Brandt, Lloyd Gray, Alvin Winter, Jake Winter, Ted Betels and John Wubben.
Casket bearers were Dick Patterson, Noel Patterson, Don Fisher, Lynn Fisher, Tim Gray, Mark Gray, Dale Winter and Doug Solie.
Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center, with military rites conducted by Buffalo Center American Legion/V.F. W. Color Guard. Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center was in charge of arrangements.
Lyle John Patterson, the son of Henry and Bess (Dorenbush) Patterson, was born July 8, 1919, on a farm southwest of Buffalo Center. He attended country school and went to two years of high school at Lakota and two years at Buffalo Center, graduating in 1936. Patterson went on to college at Upper Iowa University in Fayette where he played four years of football. He graduated from Upper Iowa in 1941. Patterson taught at Swea City High School for a couple of years and then entered the military. He served in the Air Corps for three years, being discharged in 1946. He returned to Buffalo Center and, in 1947 , married Ann Winter at the Little Brown Church. Patterson taught in Buffalo Center for three years, Titonka for 14 years, Washington for two years, and finished his teaching career at Denison. He continued as an adjuster for Farm Bureau for several years. The couple lived on a farm southwest of Buffalo Center for 27 years before building a new home in Buffalo Center where they retired.
Patterson loved traveling (mostly to visit family members), playing cards, reading, collecting a variety of items, as well as doing crafts. He was a member of the United Methodist
Church, serving in a variety of capacities. He belonged to the Lions Club and the American Legion and was a past member of the city council.
Survivors include his wife of almost 55 years, Ann, of Buffalo Center; three sons, Robert of Mason City and his special friend, Vicki, of Webster City, Ronald and his wife, Marty, of Algona , and Randy of Baton Rouge, La.; grandchildren Brandi and Francis Patterson of Sioux Falls and Katie, Jill and Brian Patterson of Algona; one sister,
Sayde Fisher of Lexington, Mo.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ray Patterson; and an infant son.
