He was born in Obersaida, Saxony, Germany. He immigrated to America with his parents and five siblings, arriving at Galveston, Texas Nov 13, 1871 on the sailing ship, Iris. He became a naturalized US citizen on Aug 29, 1906 in Bellville, Texas.

He married Emma Mieth (1867-1888) on Jan 6, 1887 in Austin County, Texas. They had one daughter, Elsa, before Emma died, apparently from a Yellow Fever epidemic that also claimed Elsa.
