A pioneer in New York bookbinding and publishing, Mr. Leavitt began his career as an apprentice bookbinder in Cambridge and Andover Massachusetts, moving to Manhattan in 1825 and entering into various publishing ventures with his brother-in-law Daniel Appleton as well as John F. Trow.

Mr. Leavitt was married three times; to Ms. Joan Ayer, Ms. Louisa Adams and finally to Ms. Angelica Patterson. Mr. Leavitt had nine children over the course of his marriages.
