U.S. Congressman. During the Civil War raised a company of volunteer infantry for the Confederate Army, served as its Captain until June 1862, then went to a Colonel in command of the 64th Virginia Cavalry until the close of the war. After the war, he was elected a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates in 1865, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced to practice law in Jonesville, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State Senate, (1871-75). In 1877, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1879. After his term, he continued the practice of law until his death at age 62.
