U.S. Congressman. He attended New Market Academy, graduated from Holston College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced to practice law in Dandridge, Tennessee. Entering politics, he was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1857- 58, 60-61), served in the Tennessee State Senate in 1865 and was judge of the second judicial circuit of Tennessee (1869-70). In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1879. After leaving Congress, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and milling until his death.
