He graduated from Aspinwall High School near Pittsburgh, attended Muskingum College and earned a BS degree in Forestry from Penn State University, graduating with the first class to use the Mont Alto forestry school campus.
He was employed by the Western Electric Company in Pittsburgh before entering the U.S. Army, where he served as a lieutenant in the Signal Corps during World War II. He was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where he was responsible for all ship-to-shore communication for naval vessels while in port.
He married Alice Bowers Black in 1955, and lived in Lancaster, PA from then until 2004. His first wife, Mary Dance, died in 1953 in Pittsburgh.
He was employed as a construction inspector by PennDOT in Lancaster for many years, retiring in 1976.
He was a communicant of Grace Lutheran Church. He served in many volunteer capacities including the Lancaster chapter of the National Audubon Society. He was an avid birder who traveled widely to see new species and participated in the annual Christmas Bird Census for many years.
He also volunteered for the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum, the Lancaster Senior Citizens, and the Lancaster-Lebanon chapter of Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees (PARSE).
He is survived by his wife, Alice; a stepson, John Black of State College; a stepdaughter Sandra Black and a sister, Jean Pospicil of Oviedo, FL.
Arrangements were by the Koch Funeral Home of State College, and he is interred in Mellinger Church cemetery in Lancaster.
