US Congressman. Successful in agricultural pursuits, also newspaper publishing, he was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1877-79, 81-85). He also studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1878 and commenced to practice law in Woodbury, Tennessee. He was chairman of the Democratic State convention in 1888 and judge of the Tennessee eighth judicial circuit court (1894-1905). In 1905, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-ninth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1919. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
