US Congressman. He studied law at Cumberland University Tennessee, was admitted to the bar in 1853 and proceeded to practice law in Union City, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1857-59), presidential elector on the Democratic ticket for Douglas and Johnson in 1860 and delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1868. In 1875, he was Democrat to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1879. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law in Gardner, Tennessee and was a member of the Tennessee State Senate (1891-93). He died at the age of 70.
