U.S. Senator. He graduated from the Transylvania University Kentucky, in 1823, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1826 and commenced the practice of in Bayou Sara, Louisiana. Moving to New Orleans, in 1845, he engaged in the practice of law and was a successful planter. He was a United States Attorney for the district of Louisiana, (1845-47). In 1847, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1853. After his term, he was appointed by President Franklin Pierce collector of the port of New Orleans and served until his death at age 53 while at his family's Kentucky plantation.
