J. M. Baker died at his residence, near Lavansville, Oct., 19, 1880, aged 35 years, 10 days. The deceased was an active member of the Lutheran church, in Lavansville. He was an earnest worker in the Sabbath School and Prayer Meeting, and a liberal supporter of the Church. He was Secretary of the Somerset County S. S. Association, at the time of his death. During his sickness (diphtheria) he expressed entire submission to the will of God, yet at the same time having a desire to depart and be with Christ; which is far better. He leaves a wife and son to mourn his loss. A funeral sermon was preached by the pastor from Phil. 1:21, "To die is gain."
