A. J. Bever, for many years a resident of Poweshiek County, especially in the Hartwick and Guernsey communities, died Sunday, July 10, in Garfield, AK where he had made his home in recent years. The body was brought to Victor Monday evening and the funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Congregational church at Hartwick, conducted by Rev B W Northrop. Interment was in the Hartwick cemetery.

A. J. Bever was born in Ohio on January 17, 1847 and at his death had reached the age of 80 yrs 5 months and 23 days. He came to Illinois with his parents when a young man and after the death of his mother he enlisted in the defense of his country as a member of Company "C" 51st regiment of Illinois and re-enlisted at the expiration of his first enlistment in Company "I" 4th regiment of the Veterans Reserve Corps.

He moved to Iowa after the close of the war, settling near Brooklyn in Poweshiek County. He followed farming for a time and also was engaged in the mercantile business in Hartwick and Guernsey. He was a resident of those communities for almost 46 years, with the exception of three years spent in Missouri. In 1912 he moved to the Ozarks in Arkansas and made his home in Garfield until his death on Sunday, July 10, 1927

Mr Bever was thrice married. His first wife was Phoebe Barnum whom he married in 1867, (*1) one child, Rose, being born of this union. His wife died in 1873, and in 1875 he was again married to Carrie Payne, who died in 1882. Two daughters, May and Lily, were born of this marriage. In 1914 he married Mary Dunlap, (*2) who passed away in 1922.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs Rose Stephenson of Garfield, AK, Mrs May Boody of Belle Plaine, IA and Mrs Lily Hanley of Eureka Springs, AK, besides four grand childre, seven great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Mr. Bever was an upright honorable man, a firm believer in the Supreme Being. He was dependable in business life and conscientious in all his dealings, loved by all who knew him.
