He was born to Homer and Kathryn Schlegel in Albany, the fourth of eight children. He grew up farming in Albany, and upon graduating from high school served in WWII as an Army pilot. Afterward, he attended three years at Oregon State University studying history, then entered seminary at Bob Jones University, majoring in Bible and graduating in May 1951.
In September of that year, Leo married M. Ernestine Clutts. Together they ministered in Baptist and Mennonite churches for 45 years, pioneering in Pico Rivera, Calif., as missionaries in Anchorage, Alaska, pastoring for 22 years in Aloha, and interim pastoring for Prince of Peace, Calvary, Zion and Salem Mennonite churches.
Leo is survived by his wife, Ernestine Schlegel; his children, David Schlegel, Jane Seaders and Leslie Starr; his grandchildren, Garrett Schlegel and Jordan Schlegel, Ben Walker, Jessica Jung and Luke Walker, Kendra Landon, Andrea Starr and Gabriel Starr; his sisters, Olivine Glavin and Doris Harvey; and his brother George Schlegel.
A man of mercy, an encourager, an apostle, and generous, Leo was enthusiastic about life. He loved playing golf, gardening and watching college and pro sports. He was an avid OSU supporter. His greatest passion was for the spreading of the gospel of Jesus Christ and God's great love for all mankind.
Services were held at Calvary Mennonite Church in Aurora on June 12, officiated by the Rev. Al Egg. The honoring and celebration of Leo's life was well attended and joyous. Leo's body was laid to rest in Zion Mennonite Cemetery in Aurora. His spirit lives on in his new heavenly body.
