Rex Pigott, 78, died Sept. 15, 2011, at his home with his family by his side following an extended illness.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 tonight at Tylertown Baptist Church and will continue there at 9 a.m. Saturday until services at 11 a.m. Dr. Hardy Denman and the Rev. Justin Knight will officiate, and burial will follow in New Zion Cemetery.

Mr. Pigott was born Jan. 15, 1933, in Walthall County, to M.O. and Lennie Fortenberry Pigott. He was an educator and cattle farmer. He began his career in education at Thomas High School in Thomas, La., and then New Zion High School. For 34 years, he served as a teacher and principal at Tylertown High School.

Mr. Pigott was elected to the Mississippi Beta Council in 1975 and served for 27 years until his retirement in 2002. In 1981, he was elected Mississippi Beta Council chairman and served for 21 years. He served as the National Beta Club's chairman of the board of directors in the 1993-94 school year.

A member of Tylertown Baptist Church, Mr. Pigott was a Sunday School teacher and deacon, serving as chairman many times. He was a longtime member of the Rotary Club, a member and former president of the Walthall Cattleman's Association, and a member of the Walthall County Forestry Association. He also received the Walthall County Jaycees' Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service.

Mr. Pigott was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alvin Pigott and Charles Pigott, who was killed in action in World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Joyce McKenzie Pigott of the Kirklin community; a son, Mike Pigott and wife Lynn Craft Pigott of Tylertown; and a daughter, Treva Pigott Reid and husband Marlin Reid of Centreville; five grandchildren, Keith Pigott of Hattiesburg, Katie Buckhaults and husband Richard of Ellisville, Kelly Reid and wife Melissa and Les Reid and wife Tia, all of Monticello, Ark., and Daniel Reid of Gulfport; and seven great-grandchildren, Charlie and Alvin Buckhaults, John Parker, Jay Dylan, and Landon, Luke and Lane Reid.

Pallbearers are Keith Pigott, Richard Buckhaults, Kelly Reid, Les Reid, Daniel Reid and Keith Davis. Honorary pallbearers are his fishing buddies, L.M. Davis, Lamar Davis, Jimmy Dale Davis, Odis Johnson, Ernest Qualls, Bud Greer and Jimmy Thomas.
