Mr. Smith died Monday, Sept. 5, 1994. Born in Cartersville, Ga., he was a son of the late Eugene W. and Hattie Griffin Smith. He was a graduate of Furman University and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the former athletics director, head basketball coach and backfield football coach with Furman University and former defensive line coach, head defensive coach, baseball coach, athletic facilities manager and assistant to the athletics director with Clemson University. He was a former ACC Coach of the Year and a member of the Furman Athletic Hall of Fame and Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame. He helped develop Jervey Meadows, was the former manager of Littlejohn Coliseum and was a member of Clemson Alumni Association, Clemson Letterman's Club and Tiger Brotherhood.
