North Dakota Governor, U.S. Senator. After graduating from Columbia University, he earned a law degree from the University of North Dakota in 1906, was admitted to the bar, and began to practice law in Mandan, North Dakota, in 1910. He was the North Dakota Morton County Attorney (1914 to 1916) and North Dakota State Attorney General (1916 to 1920). In 1932, he was elected as a Republican, the 17th Governor of North Dakota, serving until 1934. He was again elected as a Republican, the 21st Governor of North Dakota (1937 to 1939). During his service as a two-time Governor, aid was sanctioned to farmers hurt by the depression, and funding was secured for improving old age pensions and child welfare. After leaving office, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 1941 and served until his death.
