Lord Russell

Son of William Russell, 1st Duke of Bedford, and Lady Anne Carr. Paternal grandson of Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford, and the Honourable Catharine Brydges. Maternal grandson of Robert Carr, 1st and last Earl of Somerset, and Lady Frances Howard.

William married Lady Rachel Wriothesley in 1669, daughter of the 4th Earl of Southampton. They were parents to three children.

He was a politician who opposed the succession of King James II.

His elder brother died unmarried in 1679, and he became his father's heir as Lord Russell.

William was involved in the Rye House Plot, and he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1683. Tried and convicted of treason, he was sentenced to death and his execution was carried out at Lincoln's Inn Fields in London on 21 July 1683.

His only son became the 2nd Duke of Bedford.

The attainder of Lord Russell was finally reversed by King William III in 1688/89.

He is interred at the Bedford Chapel of the parish Church of St. Michael, Chenies.
