He was admitted to the bar in 1857; served in the Union Army during the years 1861-1863 and resigned due to health problems; served as county judge of Erie County in 1877; edited, annotated and wrote several valuable books; practiced law in Buffalo since 1863 except for several years practice in Chicago 1879-1885.
