Civil War Confederate Officer. Benjamin J. Johnson was a field officer in the South Carolina‘s "Hampton Legion", having been appointed to the rank of lieutenant colonel on or about May 3, 1861. On July 21, 1861, on the battlefield of 1st Manassas, he was mounted, "riding up and down the line" when in an instant, a cannon ball to the head ended his life. Wade Hampton, the namesake of the Legion, recalled that Johnson "fell with the utmost coolness and gallantry."
