US Congressman, Texas Governor. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, rising to Sergeant of Company K, 3rd South Carolina Infantry regiment, and being wounded at the May 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania, Virginia. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Texas' 11th and 8th Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1883 to 1893, and from 1897 to 1903. He was then elected as Governor of Texas, serving from 1903 to 1907. His son was Congressman Fitz Lanham and his grandson, Edwin Moultrie Lanham Jr., was a successful author.
