Friends of Rev. J. B. Hillhouse whose boyhood home was in Calhoun, were grieved to learn of his death on December 26 in a hospital at Monroe, North Carolina after a brief illness of influenza. Mr. Hillhouse was born at Anderson, South Carolina, September 17, 1866, the fifth son of Rev. J. B. Hillhouse, Sr. and Esther Love Steele Hillhouse. In early youth he came with the family to Calhoun where the elder Hillhouse served as pastor of the Presbyterian church, as well as superintendent of the local school. Brought up in an atmosphere of ??? and intellectuality, on arriving at maturity Mr. Hillhouse naturally chose the ministry for his life work. The theological equipment was secured at McCormick Seminary, Chicago, and Southwestern University, Clarksville, Tennessee. ??? in Georgia ???, North Carolina, and South Carolina, being ??? at Bethune, South Carolina at the time of his death. Devotion, ???, ???, and ?????? humanity and make the world a better abiding place, were outstanding in the ??? of this splendid Christian worker and activities in behalf of civic ??? must suffer because of his passing. Mr. Hillhouse is survived by his wife and small daughter, one brother, Mr. Laurens Hillhouse, and one sister, Miss Ida Hillhouse. The remains were brought to Calhoun Friday morning and funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church. Rev. R. F. Telford a lifelong friend of the deceased officiating. Interment was in Chandler cemetery.

Joseph married on October 5, 1915 Eugenia (Jean) Culbertson of Lincoln County, Ga, daughter of a physician and a graduate of the Georgia State College for Women (Milledgeville) in 1911. One child, Ester Love, was born on August 31, 1920. Pastorates at Benoit, Glen Allen and Rosedale, MS (1894-96); Barnett Street Church, Atlanta (1896-01); Covington, GA (1901-06); evangelist Augusta Presbytery (1906-07; pastorates at Lebanon and Hopewell group, SC Presbytery (1907-21); Waxhaw and Tirzah group, Bethel Presbytery (1921-26); Bethune, Pine Tree and Turkey Creek Churches, Congaree Presbytery (1926-28)....After her husband's death, Jean taught at the Highland Institute (KY), and later for over 15 years at the Fassifern School for Girls (under Dr. John L. Sevier) in Hendersonville, NC.
