James was a Private in Company B of Captain Orrick's Texas Troops during the Civil War. Military Service 25 Jun 1864 Jack Co., TX. Source: Abbrev: Civil War Service Records.

He was killed and scalped by Camanhe Indians on Carrol Creek near Jacksboro while returning a wagon and supplies to a neighbor as reported in The West Texas Frontier, by Joseph Carroll McConnell. Also interviewed were Joe Fowler, A.M. Lasater, James Wood and one or two others who were early settlers in that section.

"About 1867, Lauderdale who had been to Weatherford and unloaded his supplies during the preceding day, left his home in the morning to return the borrowed wagon and horse to the home of Wilburn Brummett, a neighbor, who lived several miles away. Lauderdale lived on Carroll's Creek, about six miles from Brummett's home. When about half-way between the two places, he was massacred by the Indians, who took his horses. We beleive the Indians to have been Comanches and they also scalped him."
