During World War II, he served as a radio operator with the United States Navy in the South Pacific. He owned and operated sundry stores in both Salina and Lindsborg, and later served as the manager of Planters Bank South. He was an active member of University United Methodist Church, Methodist Men and Noon Kiwanis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Iris Eales.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; two daughters, Carolyn Wright and husband Steve, of Salina, and Joyce Jacob and husband Tom, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Beth Hazlett, of Minneapolis, Kansas; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th, Salina, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at University United Methodist Church, Salina, with the Rev. Mike Rose officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina. Memorials may be made to the church, Kansas Wesleyan University Philharmonic Choir or Salina Presbyterian Manor
