On Saturday afternoon, Nov. 9, Hume and vicinity was shocked at the sudden death of an old and respected resident. Mrs. Emeline Matthews, while at the home of her niece, Mrs. O. Coy of Hume, fell down a flight of cellar stairs, dislocating her neck and fracturing the skull, only living about an hour. Mrs. Emeline Slocum was born in Herkimer county July 14, 1824. She moved to Allegany county with her parents when a young girl where she lived with them near Hume village until Sept., 1842, at which time she was united in marriage to Bradley Benton. They lived west of Hume village until Mr. Benton died in 1863. In 1875 she was married to Elias Matthews and they lived near Pratts Mills until Mr. Matthews died in 1886. Mrs. Matthews soon after moved to Hume where she has since resided. She leaves to mourn their loss one daughter, Mrs. F. M. Lane of Milton, Kan., and one son, Wm. E. Benton of Centerville. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Melisse Chase of Conesus, Livingston Co. and a brother, Joseph Slocum of Franklinville. The funeral was held at Hume Nov, 15 and the remains were, interred in the Pine Grove cemetery. Not only has a loving mother and sister been lost, but a loved and trusted friend to those who knew her. Her friends were afforded much consolation from the fact that while still conscious she said to those with her, "Don't feel bad, it is all right, it is all right."
