4th Baron Howard de Walden
1st Baron Braybrooke
Knight of the Bath

Son of William Whitwell and the Honourable Anne Griffin. Maternal grandson of James Griffin, 2nd Baron Griffin of Braybrooke, and Anne Raynsford.

He was born John Griffin Whitwell, but had his name surname changed to Griffin by an Act of Parliament in 1749. John was a descendant of James Howard, 3rd Earl of Suffolk, and a nephew of Elizabeth, Countess of Portsmouth.

The Countess of Portsmouth agreed to leave him her interest in Audley End if he changed his surname to Griffin.

The Barony of Howard de Walden was called out of abeyance in his favour on 3 August 1784, and he was also created 1st Baron Braybrooke in 1788.

He had a successful military career, serving with distinction in the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. He became a Knight of the Bath in 1761 and a field marshal in 1796.

John was twice married. First in 1749 to Anna Maria Schutz, and second to Catherine Clayton in 1765. Neither marriage produced children.

Upon his death the barony of Howard de Walden fell into abeyance, while the barony of Braybrooke, according to special remainder, was inherited by his kinsman Richard Neville-Aldworth.

The 2nd Baron Braybrooke also inherited the family seat of Audley End in Essex, and assumed the surname Griffin by Royal License.

Lord Howard de Walden and Braybrooke is buried in the Howard Vault. The vault, now completely bricked in, was closed in 1860.
