Dowager Countess of Suffolk

Daughter of Sir Henry Knyvett of Charlton, Wiltshire, and Elizabeth Stumpe. Paternal granddaughter of Sir Henry Knyvett. Maternal granddaughter of Sir James Stumpe and Bridget Bayton.

She was the sister of the Countess of Rutland and the Countess of Lincoln.

Katherine was first married to the Honourable Richard Rich, son of the 2nd Baron Rich. Their marriage was childless, and Richard died in February 1580.

She married secondly Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, circa 1583. They were parents to fourteen children, including: the 2nd Earl of Suffolk, the 1st Earl of Berkshire, the 1st Baron Howard of Escrick and the Countesses of Salisbury, Banbury and Somerset.

She survived her second husband by seven years.

The Dowager Countess of Suffolk is buried in the Howard Vault. The vault, now completely bricked in, was closed in 1860.
