Emanuel, a blacksmith, was the son of Jacob and Christina Rohrbaugh Frey.

He enlisted in Battery B of the 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery at Carlisle, Pa., on February 8, 1864. He served until mustered out on June 9, 1865, four months prior to Oct. 12, 1865, when the remainder of the company was mustered out.

His Civil War Pension file, in which he consistently signed his name as "Fry," enumerates the many injuries he incurred in the war as attested to by Dr. Seitz of Glen Rock, Pa., in 1890: deaf in the left ear with decreased hearing in the right ear due to proximity to the guns; blind in right eye with occipital neuralgia due to a cut that was sewn at Northanna River; lumbar pain; non-weight-bearing left leg due to being kicked by a horse and then struck by a shell fragment on the same leg at Petersburg; jaundice.

He died due to a fall from a second story window. Information passed down through the family ([email protected]) indicates that he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and had frequent nightmares about his war experiences. His accidental death occurred during one such episode.

During his final days he was cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Thomas M. Smith.
His death certificate (Md. #33168) originally gave his year of birth as 1851 and was then altered to 1848.

His marriage to Mary Ann "Carker" is recorded in the records of Immanuel Evangelical Church, Glen Rock, Pa., as Sept. 29, 1870.

The children listed in his Civil War pension application and their dates of birth are as follows: John W. Fry, 8/1/1871; Ellsworth Fry, 9/19/1873; E. Robert Fry, 3/7/1876; Cora M. Fry, 2/19/1883; Geo. Franklin Fry, 11/9/1885; Clarence Harrison Fry, 5/5/1888; and Florence Fry, 4/30/1891.
