Phyllis B. (Arens) Englert, 95, of Hills, Iowa, went home to be with the Lord on May 19, 2009.
Phyl was born June 16, 1914, in Remsen, Iowa, the third of ten children of Jim and Mollie (Kennedy) Arens. She married Martin (Marty) Englert on February 5, 1935, in Remsen, Iowa. They moved to Los Angeles, Calif. with their daughter, Margie, in 1941 and had five more children. Phyl was a loving wife and devoted mother to her six children. The family was involved in a tragic car accident in 1956 that took the lives of Marty and daughters Margie (20) and Jeanne (11). Phyl and four of her children survived. Armed with her Catholic faith, strong will and support of her siblings, Phyl beat all odds and survived her injuries. She returned to Remsen in 1958 to raise her children. Phyl moved to Iowa City in 1999 to be closer to her daughter, Ruth Wittkop, and family. Phyl was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and her family. She greatly enjoyed time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, sisters and brothers-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews. Phyl was definitely the "Queen of Hearts". She loved to play cards, especially with her family, was an avid reader and Yahtzee player.
Survivors include: Her children, Ron Englert of Redondo Beach, Calif., Dottie (Bill) Hodgen of Omaha, Neb., Sharon Brahms (Miles Grant) of San Francisco, Calif., Ruth (Doug) Wittkop of Iowa City, Iowa; six grandchildren, Sean, Troy (Kim), Brent (Kathleen) Hodgen, Marni Hodgen (Patrick Ashcroft), Elizabeth and Paige Wittkop; seven great-grandchildren; five sisters, Helen Jaminet, Mary Loutsch, Doris Wurth, Jane (Lee) Konz of Remsen, Iowa and Esther Konz of Alton, Iowa; sisters-in-laws, Doris Arens, Elvira Arens, Mary Ann Arens, Della Clarke, Rita Hayden and Jean Englert; and many nieces and nephews.
