Charles Wood, a former resident of this city, was killed on the Wisconsin Central Railway near his home at Unity, Wisconsin, on Sunday, May 17, 1908. We was walking on the railway, in a cut, and being quite deaf did not hear the train until it was almost upon him. He was almost off the track when he was struck on one side by the pilot of the engine, breaking one leg in two places, his arm, and neck, his injuries causing death instantly. Deceased was born in New York state on Feb. 20, 1837, hence was 81 years of age when he died. He located in Watertown in 1849, and for many years conducted a large woood-working establishment on the south half of the block on which St. Bernard's Church is situated, manufacturing bedsteads, chairs, rakes, etc. During the War of Rebellion, he enlisted in Co. B 29th Wisconsin Regiment on August 12, 1862, being commissioned first lieutenant. He served in the army till June 3, 1863. About 25 years ago, Mr. Wood and family removed to Unitywhere they have made their home on a farm. Mrs. Wood died a bout one year ago. Six Children survive him, eing Ernest M. Wood of Chicago; Guy, Carl and Leona of Unity, WI, Mrs. Georgeanna Rittenhouse, of the State of Washington; and Mrs. George fox of Jefferson. The news of Mr. Wood's death was received here with a great deal of sorrow, for he was held in high esteem by all of his old friends and neighbors. He was an enterprising, progressive man, and in early days here employed a large number of people in his factory, and in all his dealings he was considered an honorable man.
