US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Ohio's 1st congressional district for five consecutive terms, from January 1953 until January 1963. Born Gordon Harry Scherer, he graduated with a law degree from Salmon P. Chase College of Law in 1929, passed the bar, and began practicing law in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1952 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, succeeding fellow Republican Charles H. Elston. In 1962 he declined to seek re-election and after the end of his final term, he returned to his law practice in Cincinnati. From 1965 until 1972 he served in the Ohio Legislative Assembly and from 1972 until 1973 he was the US representative to the United Nations. He died at the age of 81.
