Wrote the "Sweet Bye and Bye". Married 1-15-1861 Person Co., NC, MARY JANE EVANS Born 3-15-1840 Person Co., NC., Died 9-1-1916 NC. Burial: Tingen Family Cemetery Rt. 158 East; Roxboro NC. Joseph was a farmer, musician, song writer, Justice of the Peace and Postmaster. He wrote "God be with you" copyrighted by fictitious name "Tomer". Tomer was created from his dedication page on which he dedicated to his mother. Spelled "To Mur", since his education was limited. He also wrote "Sweet Bye & Bye" and "Till We Meet Again". He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War under General Robert E. Lee as bandmaster,Co. H.24th NC Regiment. Members of Old School Baptist Church.They resided Allensville, N. C. 1870 census, Roxboro, NC 1880 census, & Flat River Twp., 1900 census. Joseph married (2) 5-16-1917 by Baptist minister, Durham Co., NC at age 77, MARY C. STEWART B. 1849. Joseph resided at Timberlake, NC at time of his second marriage. Burial: Tingen Family Cemetery 158 East; Roxboro NC.

The 24th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 14th Volunteers, was organized at Weldon, North Carolina, in July, 1861. Men of this unit were recruited in Halifax, Onslow, Johnston, Cumberland, Robeson, Person, and Franklin counties. Ordered to Virginia, it se rved in the Army of the Kanawha, then moved to Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where it remained for a time. During the war it was assigned to General R. Ransom's and M.W. Ransom's Brigade. The 24th was active from the Seven Days' Battles to Fredericksburg , fought at Plymouth and Drewry's Bluff , then participated in the Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. It lost 9 killed, 42 wounded, and 12 missing at Malvern Hill , 20 killed and 44 wounded in the Maryland Campaign, 4 killed and 24 wounded at Fredericksburg, and 11 killed and 89 wounded at Plymouth. Many were disabled at Sayler's Creek, and it surrendered 1 Assistant-Surgeon and 54 men.
