Father of Louis Francis Sockalexis, first Indian major league ballplayer. Served as governor (sagama)of the Penobscot Nation. Athletic and physically gifted. Although he tried to persuade Louis to stay on Indian Island and serve his people, Louis was determined to play pro baseball. Eventually Francis became a fervent supporter of his son and was there in person when Louis hit his most famous home run off Giants pitcher Amos Rusie in New York.
