As a workman Ronald was killed in an accidental fall. A notice in the Oregonian, dated 18 March 1969, reported: "Ronald P. Hilby, 39, of 111 NE 99th Ave., fell six floors from the roof of the eight-story Multnomah Building (old Multnomah Hotel) to the roof of a two -story courtyard. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Bess Kaiser Hospital."
