U.S. Congressman. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1848 and settled in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. During the Civil War, he served in Company C, 1st Regiment, Wisconsin Heavy Artillery, Union Army. After the war, he relocated to Belgrade, Minnesota and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was justice of the peace, (1870-75), chairman of the board of supervisors, (1870-80), township assessor in 1880, town clerk, (1880-91) and a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives, (1886-88). In 1891, he was elected as a Populist to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed agricultural pursuits until 1924. He retired in North Dakota, until his death at age 89.
