Jean Kauffman was born 10 Feb 1830 in France, in the small town of Kirviller, which is in the département of Moselle, in the province of Lorraine.
Kirviller is a rural Lorraine village juxtaposed with Alsace. Its geographical position gives it a special history. It is a Catholic Lorraine village next to the former Protestant Alsace. Located in a German-speaking sector, it nevertheless kept the French language for its administrative acts.
The village suffered great damage during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), to the point of being abandoned for several decades.
Sometime after immigrating to Ohio, Jean Americanized his name to John.
