DEATH CLAIMS PIONEER WOMAN. MRS. MARY KOPP DIES AT HOME OF SON FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS. Had Been Resident of Petoskey and Region since 1877-To Have Funeral Tomorrow. In the death here Yesterday of Mrs. Mary Kopp, Petoskey and Bear Creek township lose another pioneer woman. Mrs. Kopp had been a resident of the city and nearby farm section since 1877 and was well known and loved by all who knew her. Mrs. Kopp came to America with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Feile, from Germany when only four years of age, coming to this country in a sail boat which took nearly three months to make the trip and the passage was so rough that they had to chain the trunks down to keep from losing them overboard. The family setttled in St. Mary's, Penn., where during the Civil War days, she met and married Adam Kopp. Twelve years later they moved to their farm home four miles east of Petoskey in Bear Creek township, where they lived for many years. Mr. Kopp died May 9, 1926, and since that time Mrs. Kopp has made her home with her son, Michael Kopp at 909 Grove street where she passed away. Her age was 87 years, 10 months and four days. Mrs. Kopp has been quite feeble for a long time and her daughter-in-law has given her every care during her illness. She is survived by three sons, Joseph Kopp, of Los Angeles, Cal., Michael J. Kopp and Henry Kopp of Petoskey; and six daughters Mrs. George Meister, Gary, S.D.; Mrs. Josephine Wilehelm and Mrs. Frank Konle, of Petoskey; Mrs. Steve Kruzel, Grand Rapids; Sister M. Albina, Manitawoc, Wis.; and Mrs. Elizabeth Kruzel, of Cross Village. One daughter, Mrs. Frank Daniel died last winter and one son John died in 1910 as a result of an accident at the tannery where he was working. One sister, Ottilia is at St. Mary's, Penn. Mrs. Kopp was an ardent worker in her church and a member of the Altar society. As a early pioneer, Mrs. Kopp was identified with all that was of interest in the life of her community. the funeral will be held from St. Francis church Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock and burial will be in the St. Francis cemetery.--transcribed from The Petoskey Evening News 9 Dec 1929.
