Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. His true name was Charles Veale. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company D, 4th US Colored Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on September 29, 1864 at Chapin's Farm, Virginia. His citation reads "Seized the national colors, after two color bearers had been shot down close to the enemy's works, and bore them through the remainder of the battle."
