Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Lieutenant in Company G, 4th Vermont Infantry for action on May 3, 1863 at Salem Heights, Virginia. His citation reads "Distinguished bravery in action where he was wounded and had a horse shot from under him." He rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Army post-war.
