According to The Union newspaper for November 1, 1919, p. 1.,

"Captain Hercules Carrel was conspicuous for his friendly feeling to colored people, and many a poor fugitive slave did he bring to freedom, although by so doing, he many times risked his life and property, for in those days, helping a slave to escape was a flagrant offense, punished by imprisonment and forfeiture of property."
