Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was serving as a Second Lieutenant in Company G, 116th United States Colored Troops when he earned his Medal. Thorn earned his Medal of Honor during Gen. Benjamin Butler's Bermuda Hundred Campaign, Virginia when the dirt berm holding the water in the newly-constructed Dutch Gap canal was being demolished with explosives. His citation reads: After the fuze to the mined bulkhead had been lit, this officer, learning that the picket guard had not been withdrawn, mounted the bulkhead and at great personal peril warned the guard of its danger. The Medal was awarded on December 8, 1898.
