Freddie Butler

Freddie Butler, age 84, 1744 Glendale Ave. formerly of Wesleyville, Pa., passed away Monday, October 15, 2011 at the Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center. He was born in Natchez, Miss. on June 15, 1926, son of the late Clarence and Sammy Ella Morrow Butler. He was a resident of Erie for 63 years, relocating to Erie from Ansonia, Conn.

He was retired from Bucyrus Erie, where he was a Machinist, after 35 years of service. He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Navy where he served in Guadalcanal, received a Victory Medal and was inducted into the Ancient Order of the Deep and the Imperial Domain of the Golden Dragon for Good Sailors of the Seven Seas.

He was a member of the Masonic Order. Freddie was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

He enjoyed hunting, gardening and was known for the truck he used while helping others. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred E. Williams Butler; a daughter Beverly Ann Butler; three brothers, Clarence, Walter and Eddie Butler; four sisters, Josephine Evans, Katie Ruth Duncan, Queen Ella Davis and Lily Ray; and a great-granddaughter, Aria Butler.

He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Frederick K. Butler (Joyce) of Providence, Rhode Island, Gary Butler of Edinboro, Pa. and Victor Butler (Tonya) of Houston, Texas, and two daughters, Bonita K. Booker of Erie and Maria Hardiman, of Silver Spring, Maryland; two brothers, Andrew Butler and Willie Butler; two sisters, Corinne Bruce and Mary Gatison; eight grandchildren, Brian Booker (Iliana), Lea Booker (Anson Park), Elizabeth Butler, Kate Butler (Aaron Tanimoto), Eric Hardiman, Camille Hardiman, Timothy Butler (Vanessa) and Ashanti Butler (Brandon Willis); four great-grandchildren, Bonita M. Booker, Jakai Billingsley, Damaris Billingsley and Aizha Willis; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, 4 to 8 p.m., at Law Funeral Home, and may attend a service on Friday, 1 p.m., at Shiloh Baptist Church, 901 E. 5th St., conducted by Bishop Clifton McNair III of Word of Life Christian Center.

Interment in Lakeside Cemetery.
