Buffalo, Dec. 19- One of the most prominent farmers of the Buffalo region, John M. Cowden, is dead, at the Cowden home in Mt. Pleasant township after a brief illness from pneumonia. Death occurred Saturday night at 9 o'clock. He was 45 years of age and a member of one of the pioneer families of Washington county. He was widely known not only in the Mt. Pleasant township but throughout this county, of which he was a native. About two weeks ago, Mr. Cowden returned from a short trip to Chicago, there he apparently contacted a heavy cold which quickly developed into pneumonia. Until Saturday his life was despaired of. However, in the evening he rallied appreciably. This was of short duration and the patient soon took a turn for the worse and died. John M. Cowden was a son of the late Joseph Cowden, who died one year ago. He was born in Cecil township, where his boyhood was spent. Twelve years ago he moved to Hickory, purchasing the James Miller farm. In 1899 he was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Mitchell, of Ohio. Mr. Cowden was a member and elder in the United Presbyterian church of Hickory and for several years superintendent in the Sunday School of that church. Besides his wife he leaves the following children: Margaret, James, Martha, John, and Kyle. He also leave the following brothers and sisters: Thomas, Lora and Martha Cowden, of Cecil township, and Mrs. Mary Hagan of Canonsburg. The funeral will be held from the late home Tuesday at 12 o'clock services being conducted by Dr. William A. McConnell and the Rev. Charles Stunkard. Interment in will be in the Canonsburg Cemetery. - Washington Observer, Dec. 20, 1909
