Mary Ann Reid was born in Mason County, Kentucky, the daughter of William "Pony" Reid and Dorothy Ray "Dolly" Donaldson, who were married in Mayesville in 1830. Both were from families that had migrated early from Virginia to Kentucky. Reids moved to Missouri where Dolly died before 1850.

Mary Ann married Thomas William Crawford in 1848 in Andrew County; daughter Martha Jane was born about 1850, followed by son Thomas William Crawford mid-1850s. By 1860 husband T. W. had died, and Mary Ann remarried to Logan Teague, originally from Tennessee. Reids and Teagues moved in a large pack to Denton County, Texas.

Logan Teague served in the South Carolina 22nd Regiment during the Civil War. Pony Reid supplied horses to the Confederacy. At the end of the War, the family migrated to Arkansas where Logan died in 1892, then Mary Ann moved with her children to Bonner County, Idaho.
