The daughter of Martin A. Douglas Hanks and Sarah "Elizabeth" Silver, Alta married Dr. Ernest Lee Sidwell on 24 Jan 1907 in Calhoun County, Illinois. He was the son of Samuel E. Sidwell and Ella Sanders.

Ernest graduated from Kansas City Veterinarian College in 1915. He opened his practice in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois shortly after his graduation. He remained active in his business for 47 years.
Alta became a representative for Luzier's Beauty Products in 1930. She worked for them until she was 86.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville. Her husband belonged to the Church of Christ.
Ernest practice veterinary medicine until he was hospitalized at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri in early 1962. He died there of a pulmonary embolism 3 1/2 weeks later at the age of 74.
Alta's brother, Clifford Clarence Hanks, was a long-time and well-known funeral director in Calhoun County and Pike County, Illinois. The founder of several Hanks Funeral Homes, he died in 1966.
Alta retired from selling beauty products in 1975. As her health declined, she eventually became a resident at Garnet's Chateau nursing home in Jerseyville. She died there at the age of 98 years, 4 months and 25 days.
She was survived by 1 daughter, Jewell Ringhausen of Jerseyville, Illinois; 7 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Alta was preceded in death by 1 son, Kenneth Sidwell; her mother and father; and 8 siblings.
Visitation was held at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville on 06 Nov 1987 and the following morning. Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. on the afternoon of 07 Nov 1987 at the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the church where she was a member.
