Funeral services for Blake Johnson, Sr., 91, prominent Breckenridge business man and civil leaders were held at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Kent Marrs officiating.

Johnson was born near Fairfiled, Freestone County, Texas. He moved to Breckenridge in 1919. He was 22 years old at the time and had just been discharged from military service in World War I.

During the early days of the oil boom, he worked as a public stenographer in an effort to raise money to go to college. At that time, Breckenridge was a town of 40,000 and had more than 50 practicing attorneys.

Mr. Johnson's first job was working for T.D. Bowles, a young attorney who was also new to Breckenridge. In 1921, he was a assistant to Mr. Hungerford at the old Breckenridge YMCA and did some abstract work for Ross Elliott, Sr. Johnson bought and sold oil stock and was a partner in a hamburger stand in the old Mercantile building, now the location of the Anthony's store.

While attending the University of Texas, at Austin, Johnson became acquainted with Mary Ruth Knebel, who had been a Waco High School classmate, and on 17 March 1923, they were married.

Johnson continued his education, graduating in 1925 from the University of Texas with degrees in Business and Law.

The couple moved to Breckenridge in 1925 where Johnson worked in the land office of Landreth Production Co. When the company moved its main office from Breckenridge in 1926, Johnson became associated with Floyd Holder Insurance Agency. In 1934, Johnson established Blake Johnson Insurance Agency.

Johnson was a member of the First United Methodist Church, serving many years on the board of stewards, and a member of the Men's Morning Tower Bible class.

He was a member of the Breckenridge Square Dance Club, charter member of the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce, charter member of the Breckenridge Golf Club, 32nd degree Mason, member of the Texas Bar Association, veteran of World War I, member of the DAV.

Long active in the Breckenridge Lions Club, Johnson was made a lifetime member. He drew up in the charter for the local chapter of the AARP in 1973 and served as president protem while helping organize the group. Johnson served as commander of the American Legion 1919 in the 1930s.

In May 1986, Johnson moved to the Fireside Lodge in Fort Worth. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1971.

Survivors: son - Blake Johnson, Jr. of Breckenridge; daughter - Mary Lynn Dutro of Saratoga, CA; five grandchildren; nieces, nephews.
