Mary Weber Wheeler Steen, 89, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 in Dallas, TX. Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2011, at Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.

Born June 6, 1922 to Charles Frank Weber and Birdie Florence Sager Weber in De Leon, Comanche County, Texas, Mary attended schools in Moran in Shackelford County, Texas, and was graduated from Moran High School in 1940 and from Tarleton State College at Stephenville in 1942.

She married her husband of 44 years, Earl Harrison Wheeler, a survivor of the Bataan Death March and Japanese POW camps during World War II, and he died in 1993.

In 2003, Mary married a former high school classmate and moved to Dallas.

She worked in the Moran National Bank for 8 years before her marriage to Earl Wheeler and moved to Abilene. She continued her banking career in Abilene, working for the Farmers and Merchants Bank and First National Bank for 37 years, retiring in 1987 after a total of 45 years in banking.

Preceding her in death was her parents, two brothers, R. E. Weber of Colorado City and Howard M. Weber of Abilene.


In lieu of flowers, Mary's favorite charities were Meals on Wheels and the Salvation Army.
